Overview
Refresh your professional knowledge, reinforce safe firearm handling, and complete renewal training at United States Security Academy (USSA). Designed for existing Texas commissioned security officers, this hybrid course combines online instruction with scheduled in-person defensive tactics and live-fire handgun qualification.
Important Renewal Information Texas DPS requires commissioned security officers to complete six hours of continuing education and submit a firearms-proficiency certificate with their renewal application. Firearms proficiency must be demonstrated within 90 days before the renewal application date. This course is for renewal and does not replace the initial 45-hour Level III training. Course completion does not automatically renew your license; students must submit their renewal application through Texas DPS. DPS application and licensing fees are separate.
Because Texas law requires handgun proficiency and self-defense portions to be completed in person, this program uses a hybrid format: eligible academic material is delivered online, while required self- defense tactics, firearms instruction, and firearms proficiency demonstration are completed in person under appropriately approved instruction
What you'll learn
- Texas Security Laws and Responsibilities: Licensing rules, professional conduct, officer authority, and limits of responsibility.
- Firearms Laws and Use of Force: Legal responsibilities when carrying a firearm, justified use of force, and deadly-force considerations.
- Handgun Safety and Handling: Safe operation, muzzle awareness, secure storage, and prevention of unauthorized access.
- Defensive Tactics and Conflict Management: Threat recognition, de-escalation, nonviolent dispute resolution, and practical defensive skills.
- Live-Fire Requalification: Instructor-supervised handgun qualification demonstrating safe handling, accuracy, and proficiency.
